§ 3-3-506. PURPOSES.

  • (a)

    In general. For the enjoyment, education, cultural enrichment, and benefit of the citizens of the county, the Commission on Arts and Sciences is responsible for:

    (1)

    Developing, coordinating, and promoting the performing and visual arts and the sciences; and

    (2)

    Making accessible presentation of programs relating to the arts and sciences.

    (b)

    Objectives. To further the purpose provided in subsection (a) of this section, the Commission shall:

    (1)

    Stimulate greater governmental and public awareness and appreciation of the importance of the arts and sciences to the people of the county;

    (2)

    Encourage and implement greater and more efficient use of governmental and private resources for the development and support of the arts and sciences;

    (3)

    Encourage and implement opportunities for county residents to participate in artistic and scientific activities;

    (4)

    Promote the development of county artists, scientists, and institutions and regional organizations sponsoring arts, science activities, and audiences;

    (5)

    Survey and assess the needs of the arts and sciences and of the people of the county relating to arts and sciences and, on request, make the information collected promptly and regularly available to all interested agencies and persons;

    (6)

    Support and implement the preservation and growth of the county's artistic and scientific resources;

    (7)

    Foster the development of a receptive climate for the arts and sciences, to culturally enrich and benefit the citizens of the county, and to attract to the county additional outstanding creators in the field of arts and sciences through appropriate programs, publicity, education, coordination, and activities, including the presentation of lectures and exhibitions and central compilation and dissemination of information on the progress of the arts and sciences in the county;

    (8)

    Encourage and coordinate the artistic and scientific activities of other governmental agencies, including those concerned with the public educational system; and

    (9)

    Provide organizations that promote the arts and sciences in the county with information and assistance.

    (c)

    Public purpose. The purposes provided in this section are deemed public purposes.

    (d)

    Role of individual members. A Commission member may not view the member's commission role to be that of representing a particular geographic area of the county, interest group, arts or science institution, community organization, or audience.
