§ 19-1-302. APPOINTMENT; QUALIFICATIONS; TRAINING.

  • (a)

    Appointment. The Chief of Police may appoint individuals as auxiliary police officers.

    (b)

    Qualifications. An individual seeking appointment as an auxiliary police officer shall present a statement from a physician certifying that the applicant is:

    (1)

    Capable of performing the functions of trained and sworn police officers or civilian personnel;

    (2)

    Of good moral character;

    (3)

    Of stable temperament;

    (4)

    At least 21 years old; and

    (5)

    A high school graduate or its equivalent.

    (c)

    Training.

    (1)

    An auxiliary police officer shall receive the training prescribed by the Department and approved by the Chief of Police.

    (2)

    The training shall consist of subjects necessary for the auxiliary police officer to properly perform assigned duties, including operation of police radios and teletype, constitutional law, civil rights, laws of arrest, search and seizure, juvenile procedures, arrest and restraining tactics, general traffic laws and procedures, emergency situations, assisting at accident scenes, parade details, special events, and testifying in court.
